How are custom medals made?
- Drawn in relief The design is drawn for depth as well as outline: what is raised, what is recessed, and what happens on each side and around the edge.
- Die struck Steel dies are cut from the drawing and the design is struck into a zinc alloy or brass blank under heavy pressure.
- Edged The edge is left plain, or cut with a reeded or cross-cut pattern.
- Plated Antique gold, silver, copper or a polished finish. Antique finishes darken the recesses so the relief stands out.
- Coloured and shipped Enamel colour is added where the design calls for it, and the run ships from Dubai.

Tooling Can one die make gold, silver and bronze?
Yes. The die is cut once and the plating changes per piece, so a three-place set carries a single tooling charge.
Ribbon Can the ribbon carry a logo?
Yes — ribbon can be printed or woven with a name, sponsor or event mark along its length.
Criteria What should I look for in a custom patch company?
Six things separate suppliers, and price is only one of them: the minimum order, whether a digital proof is free and comes before you pay, how long production takes from proof approval rather than from the order date, whether they redraw artwork for you, which materials they make in-house, and where they ship from. Ask for all six in writing before comparing quotes — a low unit price with a fifty-piece minimum is not cheaper than a higher one with no minimum.
